Equipment Type form
The Equipment Type form enables you to add and edit equipment types. In addition, you can use the Actions Copy Reference Set (on page 1) option to copy equipment types defined in an existing entity set.
For your initial setup, we recommend that you add the standard list of equipment types. For more information, see Set-up Database view.
To add or edit an equipment type:
In the ISO Id field, enter an equipment type code that uniquely identifies the equipment type.
After you save the equipment type, you cannot modify the specified equipment type code.
From the General Class drop-down list, select an equipment class for the equipment type: Container, Chassis, Semitrailer, Mafi, Accessory, or Dummy.
You can use the Dummy equipment class to create a dummy equipment type without the length, height, width, nominal length, and nominal height values. This is useful for creating service order items for any general events.
When you select the Dummy equipment class, you can only enter a value for the ISO Id field. N4 fills in values for the other fields. Even if you modify any of the field values, N4 does not save the entered values.
Navis recommends using the Dummy equipment class only when creating an equipment type of this class in the Equipment Type form. Although, the Dummy equipment class will be visible in the Equipment Class drop-down list in equipment related forms, it must not be used.
From the ISO Group drop-down list, select the ISO group for the equipment type, such as GP for a general purpose container without ventilation. Similarly, to process container of type rotainers at the gate you must select the ISO group BR (Bulk Cargo in Rotainer) from the drop-down list.
When you edit the General Class or the ISO Group of an equipment type, SPARCS N4 does not automatically update the General Class or the ISO Group of any equipment using this equipment type. You must update the General Class or the ISO Group of each equipment. For containers, you can use the Update Container Properties form (on page 1) to update the General Class or the ISO Group.
For more information about ISO groups, go to www.smdg.org.
Select the Is Archetype? check box if the equipment type is also an archetype for other equipment types.
Optionally, from the Archetype drop-down list, select an archetype for the equipment type. If the Is Archetype? check box is checked then you do not need to select an archetype.
If you do not select an archetype, then SPARCS N4 assumes that the new equipment type is an archetype. When you reopen the Equipment Type form, SPARCS N4 displays the Is Archetype? check box as selected.
When you select an archetype in the Archetype drop-down list, SPARCS N4 displays a Warning form asking if you want to reset the basic properties of the equipment type based on the selected archetype. To reset the basic properties, click Yes.
XPS considers equipment types that share the same archetype equivalent for certain uses, such as when selecting an empty container for dispatch or when planning a container in the yard.
In the Tare Weight field, enter the standard tare weight for the equipment type. When SPARCS N4 creates new equipment for this equipment type, if a user or an EDI message does not specify the tare weight, then SPARCS N4 applies this tare weight to the new equipment record.
To enter weight using a specific unit, type the standard unit symbol, such as lb (pounds), mt (metric ton), lt (long ton), or st (short ton), immediately after the numeric value. For example, to specify weight in Pounds, enter 50000 lb in the text field. The symbol for the default unit for a field is displayed as part of the field label.
In the Safe Weight field, enter the standard safe weight for the equipment type. When SPARCS N4 creates new equipment for this equipment type, if a user or an EDI message does not specify the safe weight, then SPARCS N4 applies this safe weight to the new equipment record.
From the Nominal Length drop-down list, select the nominal or the standard length for the equipment type.
To enter measurement using a specific unit, type the standard unit symbol, such as cm (Centimeter), m (Meter), in (Inches), ft (Feet), or yd (Yard), immediately after the numeric value. For example, to specify the length in Meters, enter 50 m in the text field. The symbol for the default unit for a field is displayed as part of the field label.
From the Nominal Height drop-down list, select the nominal or the standard height for the equipment type.
In the Length field, enter the actual length of the equipment type.
The value specified in the field label is used to store and display the length of the equipment type.
In the Height field, enter the actual height of the equipment type.
The value specified in the field label is used to store and display the height of the equipment type.
In the Width field, enter the actual width of the equipment type.
The value specified in the field label is used to store and display the width of the equipment type.
Optionally, in the Description field, enter a description for the equipment type.
Use the various tabs displayed in the form to specify additional information about the equipment type:
Properties (on page 1): Specify basic properties and stowage restrictions for the equipment type.
Reefer (on page 1): Specify reefer information for the equipment type.
Chassis (on page 1): Specify additional information if the General Class is Chassis.
If you are defining an equipment type for a bomb cart or cassette, then on the Chassis tab select the Bomb Cart or Cassette check box, accordingly. If you select the Cassette check box, N4 automatically clears the Has Wheels check box on the Properties tab. Likewise, if you clear the Has Wheels check box, N4 automatically selects the Cassette check box.
Note that you cannot define the same chassis type for both coupled and decoupled operations, such as bomb carts, because N4 requires a unique identifier to identify the chassis configuration.
Miscellaneous (on page 1): Specify miscellaneous attributes, such as SPARCS Picture ID and Milli-TEU's for the equipment type.
Event History (on page 1): View date/time and data source information recorded when the equipment type is created or modified.
When you create new equipment of this equipment type either using the SPARCS N4 interface or an EDI message and do not specify information in the Properties, Reefer, or Chassis tabs, then SPARCS N4 applies the information specified in the equipment type to the new equipment record.
Click Save. You should do a Bridge, ECN4, XPS restart afterwards. Not doing a Bridge/ECN4/XPS restart could result in the wrong picture appearing for the ISO code in XPS.
Changes made to an equipment type do not impact equipment that already exists in the database. You must update those equipment records, manually.
