The SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) Container Weight Verification feature enables terminals to comply with the SOLAS Container Weight Verification requirement, which is mandatory for all terminals as of July 1st, 2016. SOLAS is an organization that sets rules for ensuring safety at sea. The VGM is the verified gross mass of a loaded container, which a terminal could receive through EDI, manual entry, or at the gate.
The purpose of the VGM requirement is to obtain an accurate gross weight of packed containers so that vessel and terminal operators can more accurately load vessels to ensure stability and safety at sea. This enhancement enables marine terminals to comply with this mandatory requirement.
The shipper named on the carrier's BL is responsible for providing the verified gross weight for every packed container to be loaded on a vessel. This information is provided to the vessel operator and the terminal operator, generally through EDI updates such as the BAPLIE.
In support of the VGM requirements, N4:
Supports the VGM and the updating party.
Enables terminals to prevent gating in or loading containers that don't have a VGM.
Allows users to manually update these fields
Provides visibility and tracking for VGM updates
Supports the VERMAS D.16A Inbound EDI message for Verified Gross Mass
This document will explain the full range of VGM support in N4, including:
How to maintain VGM weight for units, either manually or via EDI
How to prevent loads without VGMs
How to require VGM values at the gate
How to map EDI files to support VGM values.
